Art is conceptual entertainment. No matter how radical it may be, it has a great penetration on the market.

Santiago Sierra

Sierra’s work is emblematized by a series of “remunerated actions,” documented with video and black-and-white photographs and accompanied by simple descriptive texts. Performed in carefully selected locations across the globe, from Lima to Helsinki and from Berlin to Havana, the remunerations are carried out in accordance with a standard economic equation.

Sierra’s remunerations are formulated as straightforward transactions. The twist, however, is the fact that the activities performed test the various permutations of Marx’s “socially useful labor.” The tasks assigned the individuals relocate the disjunctures of everyday labor in the artistic arena, and Sierra is thus able to unveil the economic, social, and political framework that characterizes the system in which we live.

Sierra’s aim is to confront us with situations without becoming entangled in a Messianic web of morals and recriminations. His work is not denunciatory, but takes an ambivalent path, chronicling the social disintegration that is a by-product of what Sierra believes to be an imploding economic order.
